Third Annual Taste of Tomato Voting Results

The 2013 Taste of Tomato was another great success, with interesting entries and results. At least 140 people participated, bringing 74 different tomato varieties to share. It was a great opportunity for home gardeners and other tomato-lovers to discover varieties that they can grow themselves next year, or look for at farmers markets. Representatives from Harlequin’s Gardens Nursery and Boulder County Master Gardeners were on hand to answer all kinds of tomato-growing questions.  Six lucky people won valuable door-prizes from Harlequin’s Gardens. And, as always, it was great fun!

Great efforts were put forth by the volunteers from the Boulder County Master Gardeners program, who handled the recording, washing, and cutting of all the entries. Thanks also to the Farmer Cultivation Center, Aspen Moon Farm, Cure Organic Farm, and Zweck’s Farm for donated tomatoes.

Each participant received 5 stickers and a tomato description and scoring sheet on which to record the varieties they liked the best.  When finished tasting, each person placed their stickers next to the names of their five favorites on our big voting boards. Of course the process is not scientific, but it gives a pretty good idea of which varieties taste really good when eaten fresh, no cooking, no salt. Many factors can skew the results:

Some people had already left before some popular varieties had arrived

Some entries may not have been at peak of ripeness –either over or under-ripe

Some were not available through entire tasting event

Some varieties we know are great were not represented this year

Everyone has different taste

The names of a few varieties entered could not be verified as they were presented, so we assumed they were mis-remembered by the entrants and changed them to their most likely real names (we decided that Jelly Belly was actually Jelly Bean, Campion was Champion, Pandano was Padano.) A tomato called “Anasazi” could not be found in our on-line search, so we are assuming it was given that name by the person who provided the seed, saying that it was from seed found at the site of an Anasazi ruin, and so we present the name in quotes.

Here are the results, presented alphabetically, and then in order of popularity.

We hope to see you at the 4th Annual Taste of Tomato in 2014!
